It was the kind of magical performance we rarely see in high school track and field.
And on Wednesday, the accolades kept coming for Houston Strake Jesuit graduate Matthew Boling, who was nominated for 'Best Record-Breaking Performance' for his sub-10 second 100-meter run in April ahead of the 2019 ESPYs, an awards show produced by ESPN and honoring the best in sports.
This may be the first time a high school track and field athlete has ever been nominated for an ESPY.
In 2017, following her appearance in the Olympics as a 16-year-old the year prior, Sydney McLaughlin was a special guest at the awards show but was not nominated. She is a two-time winner of Gatorade's National Player of the Year.
The Best Record-Breaking Performance category also includes Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors), Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon women's basketball) and Drew Brees (New Orleans Saints).
The ESPYS will air live on ABC on July 10 from Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California and will be hosted by comedian Tracy Morgan.
Boling won't be the only prep from his own region headed to Los Angeles.
Houston North Shore High School was nominated for 'Best Play Award' following a Hail Mary play that won a state championship.
Boling became the second boys athlete in high school history to go under 10 seconds all conditions at 100 meters this season, doing so at his regional championships in April in a time of 9.98 seconds with a 4.2 meters per second tailwind.
That time was an all conditions national record, surpassing Trayvon Bromell's all conditions best of 9.99 seconds from 2013.
Boling went on to set an National Federation of High School Athletic Associations record in the 100 meters at his UIL Texas Class 6A State Championships, running a wind-legal time of 10.13 seconds. He also won state titles in the long jump and 4x400, single-handedly willing his Strake Jesuit team to a gold in the final event of the night.
Following his 9.98 time, Boling became a worldwide sensation and a viral star, interviewed by the likes of CNN, BBC and the Dan Patrick Show. More recently, Boling, who's headed off to the University of Georgia, has been profiled by The Washington Post and Sports Illustrated.
