Northwest Round-Up April 28, 2012

There was a full week of competition in the region last week including the Centennial Invitational, which we covered in depth.  Sean Keller’s Washington State record of 244-01 in the Javelin is certainly worth repeating as was Alexa Efraimson’s 2:08 in the 800 Meters.  That race included 2:10 by Paige Rice & Anna Maxwell, which certainly made that a high performance meet.   Not to be overlooked was Anna Maxwell’s 4:32.74 in the 1500, which was the best time in years and nearly a record.

That said, there were numerous efforts of note in other places.  Marcus Dickson of White River in fact did not wait for the weekend and blitzed a 4:05 in the 1600M in a dual meet – a national leader!   Of course being in a dual meet the mark was hand-time but Marcus took care of that Shoreline, when he zipped to another national leader – this time in the 800 Meters.  His clocking of 1:49.45 was naturally a meet record but was just off the all-time state mark.   Hap Emmons of Kingston placed second in the event with 1:53.     Tatum Taylor of O’ Dea soared through the 100 Meters in 10.68 to make sure there were swift times at both ends of the running spectrum.   Kai Wilmot of North Central continued the parade of great times with his 8:57.56 in the 3200M, which saw Izaic Yorks of lakes place second in 9:05.  Joe Hardy of Seattle Prep dueled Korey Krotzer of Auburn Riverside, who signed with Oklahoma State, with Hardy getting the nod in 4:09.29.  Krotzer was barely behind in4:09.61 and Anthony Armstrong followed in a brisk 4:10.  All three runners appear in the national rankings as will Wilmot.     Drew Mathews of Skyline impressed with a 48.58 to top Ezekial McNeal of Federal Way, who ran 49.45.   The 300 Hurdles went to Aaron Persinger, who ran 38.82 for Federal Way.  Austin Hitchcock of Todd Beamer followed with 39.99 and Persinger placed second in the 100 Hurdles behind Kaid Tipton Kentridge ’s 14.99.

Fine marks were not limited to track and Matt Gilbert of Bellevue scored in the Javelin with 192-07.50.   Federal athlete Albert Havili battled Jack Scheideman of Roosevelt in the Discus with Havili getting the nod 166-03 to 161-06.  Two weight men topped fifty in the Shot put with Gino Breslin of Eastlake throwing 54-06 to his rival’s 53-04.   Michael Tate’s 23-03.50 edged Joshua Gordon of Liberty Issaquah, who went 23-00.5 in the Long Jump.   Tay’lor Ewbanks of Cascade Everett won the Triple Jump with 47-00 and Austin Sodorff of Woodinville annexed the Pole Vault title with 14-06.  The High Jump saw great rivalry with three leapers clearing 6-06 but Dakarai Hightower of Curtis got the victory with fewer misses.  Joshua Gordon of LI and Joe Knight of Roosevelt earned 2nd & 3rd

While the guys went to Shoreline the girls headed to Lake Washington, where Maddie Meyers of Northwest ran 9:37.18 to top Katie Knight of North Central, who ran 9:40.  Also running well in the event were Jordan McPhee of Mt. Rainier (10:04), Chandler Olson of Woodinville (10:15) and Stephanie Rexus of Kamiakin (10:27).   Meyers also led the way in the 1500 Meters with a solid 4:30.92.  Chandler Olson ran 4:42 for second.   Megan Beauchene of Kamiakin continued her victory streak in the 800 with her 2:13.55 defeating Lily Engelbrekt of Bishop Blanchet, who ran 2:14.  Kennadi Bouyer of Curtis scored in both the 100M (12.06) and the 200M (24.78), while Alanna Vann secured 2nd in the shorter event with 12.17 and Nancy Wade of River Ridge took 2nd in the 200M with 24.87.   Ellie Heiden of Kamiakin  triumphed once again in the 400 Meter Run with 56.91, topping Kris Tollefson, who ran 57.36, and she also placed third in the 200M with 24.99.  Michelle Stolz of Highline, who signed with North Carolina to run the hurdles at Chapel Hill, won the 300H with 44.97 and then traded places with Cecelia Jackson from Holy Names, who ran 14.38 in the 100H.

In the Field Montana Pellegrini of Thomas Jefferson went 10-06 to take the Pole Vault and Carly Anderson threw the Javelin 128-03 for Mercer Island.   The Long Jump witnessed a close contest between Brandi Williams of Auburn Riverside (18-06) and Floriane Kameni of Bellevue (18-03), while Madelyn Magee of Bear Creek went 5-06 to score in the High Jump over Juanita’s Molly Grager, who cleared 5-04 along with Andrea Stapleton of Kamiakin.   Grager had fewer misses and secured second place.    Alana Coker of Thomas Jefferson had a very solid 39-03 in the Triple Jump and was followed by Kelly Cronic of Juanita (37-05) & Nhautrey Brown of Garfield (37-02)

The Shelton Invitational had athletes of both sexes and Isaiah Brandt-Sims of Wenatchee take both short sprints in 10.77 and 21.73 and Erika Lombardo of Auburn Mountainview did the same for the girls with marks of 12.82 & 25.80.  The hurdles’ times were scorching with Daniel Zmuda running 14.83 and 38.36, which gave him surprisingly little to spare over Rashon Smith of Timberline, who ran 15.19 & 38.47.  Craig Allen of North Mason ran a fine 38.50 in the longer event to take third.   There certainly wasn’t any lack of speed in the 400 with Marcus Chambers of Foss rolling through the circuit in 47.86.  Andrew Brown of Tumwater ran 48.51 & Derrick Jones of Gig came in with 48.99 to make it a most impressive event.  Brenna Peloquin of Gig Harbor scored in the mile with 5:12 but the guys had a heated battle in their race, which Nicholas Boersma of Wenatchee won with 4:17.  Dallas Snider of W F West and Wolfgang Beck of Gig both ran 4:19, although Beck suffered a DQ giving third to his teammate Logan Carroll.  Boersma once again doubled back successfully in the 800M winning that event in 1:53.  Mason Fletcher of Puyallup (1:55) & Will Drinkwater of Gig Harbor (1:56) secured the next two spots.  It was a good week for Drinkwater, who decided to commit to Stanford.   Jacob Smith continues his return with injury – this time with a victory in the 3200M in 9:03.  Curtis King of Peninsula & Mark Tedder of Battle Ground placed 2nd & 3rd.    Winners in the Field events included Tyler Ambrose (Shot  - 52-00) for the Harbor, Phoung Truong (Discus – 164-02 for Mt.       Not to forget our friends in Idaho there was action in Minico, which featured a match-up of national class athlete Erik Harris & Dallin Farnsworth.  Unfortunately it was anti-climactic with Farnsworth running sick, which left Harris pretty much unchallenged, as he raced to victory in 10:22.  Ryden Crowther of Preston placed second in 10:35.  Daniel Perry of Rigby won the 1600M with 4:47 & Alan Cazeau of Kimberly won the 100M with 10.84 defeating Kimball Hardman, who ran 11.04.  Scott Mecham of Rigby just missed breaking forty with his mark of 40.00 in the 300 Hurdles.  Tevian Body soared 14-00 o the Pole Vault and Rigby’s John Nelson impressed with 23-00 in the Long Jump.   Jasmine Branch was a double winner for the girls with victories in the 100M (12.80) & 200M (27.07).  Kayla Adams annexed the 100M Hurdles with 15.65, while Claire Goss of Twin Falls scored in the 300 Hurdles with 49.31 after placing second (16.44) in the short event behind Rigby’s Goss.

Athletes from Nevada and California travelled to Klamath Falls for the Sterling Bank Invitational making it sort of the State of Jefferson meet for track.   McQueen High of Nevada dominated the girls’ & guys’ competition with comfortable victories in the team scoring.   Haley Harris of McQueen won both the 200M (25.94) & the 400M (57.60) but Sophia Landau of Lakeview gave a good account of herself in the longer race with a time of 59.40.  Harris also scored in the 800M with 2:20, as Sierra Brown of Hidden Valley finished second.   It was McQueen once again in the distances but this time it was Laura Palacios, who earned a double with times of 5:06 in the 1500M & 11:03.54 in the 3K.  It was the same story in the hurdles with McQueen’s Katy Hufford sweeping both events with 15.78 and 46.55.  The Nevadans scored in both the Pole Vault and Long Jump, as Natasha Black went 11-07 and Katy Hufford flew 17-10.50.  Jo-Anne Jesse of Cascade Christian broke the McQueen victory parade by claiming the Shot Put (40-01.75) over McQueen’s Karyna Armstrong (40-01.50) but then it was Armstrong on the podium in the Discus with 118-02.  The Javelin proved, not surprisingly, to be an Oregon event, as Bailey Bars of Hidden Valley threw for 136-04.   Hannah Morris of Eagle Point (123-04) & Jo-Anne Jesse of Cascade Christian (122-01) earned the next two places & Raycne Parker of Henley took fourth with 106-11.
