This Week in Idaho Track & Field:
Idaho Collegiate I (Moscow, Idaho)
Saturday, January 19, 2013

Looking Forward
Idaho hosts its first home meet of the 2013 season on Saturday with the Idaho Collegiate I, presented by Runners Soul of Spokane. While the opening weekend was originally schedule for a pair of home meets on Saturday and Sunday, they have been combined into one Saturday meet, which starts at 8:30 a.m. After competing a small group in last week's opener at the WSU Open, Idaho's squad will have a more robust feel this weekend with several individuals making their season debuts.

Historically Speaking
The Idaho Collegiate I is a new meet this season for Idaho, but last time the team competed within the confines of the Kibbie Dome was last season's Vandal Collegiate. In that meet, Idaho competitors tallied 20 career bests and won five events in the team's final meet leading up to the 2012 WAC Indoor Championships. At that meet, current senior Kristine Leonard notched a four-foot PR in the weight throw with a second-place heave of 55-10.5 (17.03m) to go along with her win in the indoor discus throw (156-10, 47.80m). Idaho also got individual wins from Liga Velvere in the women's 800m (2:08.46), Jeremy Klas in the men's pole vault (17-7.75, 5.38m), Rendel Jones in the triple jump (44-7, 13.59m) and Kyle Rothwell in the men's weight throw with a career-best 58-11.5 (17.97m).

A Quick Recap
Idaho broke one school record and one meet record at the WSU Open last weekend to kick off the 2013 season, and the Vandals added five individual victories at the meet. Senior Lauren Schaffer cruised to a win in the women's 600m to break Idaho's 31-year-old school record in the event with a converted time of 1:33.21. Sophomore Ben Ayesu-Attah (47.93) held off sophomore teammate Andrew Bloom (47.97) in the men's 400m. Both times were career bests, while Ayesu-Attah broke his own meet record in the event. Sophomore Johanna Hcketstaller claimed the win in the women's shot put with a career-best toss of 47-0.75 (14.34m) and junior Kyle Rothwell (54-3.75) and senior Kristine Leonard (54-8.75) swept the men's and women's weight throw events, respectively.
