BOYS - 5A/4A HURDLES

It didn't take more than a week into the 2022 season before a hurdler smashed their way on to the scene in resounding fashion. No stranger to the big stage, last years 4A state champion in the 110H, Landon Helms of Emmett, picked up right where he left off and them some. Winning the 4A crown last year in a time of 14.89 (-0.5), Helms almost etched his name into the record books last week, narrowly missing the 4A state record with his time of 14.38 (NWI), .01 off the 4A state record of 14.37 set back in 2014 by Caldwell's Brooks Ney. With a best of 40.04 set last year at the district meet, Helms will be contesting the 300's this year for the first time in their quad meet today, as this article is published. In 5A, there is one lone sub-15 second effort retuning from last years state championship meet, and that is Caleb Woodland of Meridian. Woodland finished 2nd at the 5A championships last year in a time of 14.86 (+2.1) and is coming off of a 15.07 season-opening effort against Rocky last week.

The door is wide open in the long hurdles in both 5A and 4A. Boise's Porter Coffield has the fastest returning time out of the two division with his 40.20 at the 5A state championships last season where he placed third, but has a 39.88 effort to his name set at the district prelims last season. Coffield has since opened with a 40.18 to go along with a 14.98 110H last week against Timberline, narrowly missing his PR of 14.96. In 4A, junior Rusty Lee of Sandpoint is the top returning athlete with his state runner-up finish in a time of 40.35 (PR). Lee has yet to compete yet this 2022 season.
