Last year's 5A state champion, Tao Johnson of Thunder Ridge, has a personal best of 10.62 from last April, has opened up with an 11.05 this season (opened up with 11.01 in 2021). Johnson will have plenty of competition this season, as Boise's Mason Lawyer, a Washington State commit, has opened up his senior campaign with a 10.89. Both athletes possess great range, as Lawyer holds personal bests of 10.75/21.64/49.37 and Johnson also excels in the long jump with a PR of 22'11.50." Mountain View's Leyton Smithson, last year's state runner-up (PR, 10.79) has not raced yet in 2022.

Arguably one of the most consistent 100-meter runners last season, James Onanubosi of Bishop Kelly, returns as the defending 4A state champion. With a personal best of 10.65 set at last year's Knight Invite, Onanubosi set a class record last year with his 10.69 and has opened up his 2022 season with an 11.01, where he currently sits #1 in 4A.

Boise's Mason Lawyer is the returning 4A state champion in the 200 after racing to a 21.67, wind-aided time. Lawyer has a personal best of 21.64 wind-legal from last year's outdoor nationals. He has yet to race the 200m in 2022. Mountain View's Leyton Smithson, last year's 5A state runner-up (PR, 21.95) has not raced yet in 2022.

Boise High's Liam Murray returns to defend his 4A state championship last year (48.54), one of only two athletes last year to dip below the 49-second barrier. Murray is the fastest returner in the state but will have plenty of competition from the likes of John Efraimson (Rocky) and Mason Lawyer (Boise).
