Broncos Earn Four All-Conference Honors on Second Day of MW Championships

NAMPA, Idaho Boise State earned four all-conference honors on Friday (Feb. 22) as well as four all-time top-three school marks on the second day of the 2013 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Jacksons Indoor Track at the Idaho Center in Nampa. The Bronco men sit in fifth-place with 25-points, while the women hold the seventh spot in the team standings with 22.33 points. Boise States men and women combined for 16 individuals to advance to 21 spots in Saturdays final races.

Marisa VanderMalle earned an all-conference honor after her exciting kick in the 5000-meters. She earned a second-place finish running the second-fastest time in school history (16:49.04). Taryn Treadway added one point for the Bronco women after placing eighth in the 5000-meters with a career-best time of 17:42.67.

Heather Pilcher, a former Bronco basketball team member, earned her first conference honors as a track and field competitor, picking up a silver medal in the long jump. Pilcher jumped a career-best of 19-6 (5.94m) moving up one spot to second-place on her final attempt of the day. Kimberly Miller combined with Pilcher for nine team points after placing eighth with a jump of 18-7 (5.66m). Also scoring for the Bronco women on Friday was Lauran Johnson, who cleared 5-4.50 (1.64m) to tie for eighth in the high jump.

Wyatt Diederickson, Tyler June, Tyler Rackleff and Zach Wiles combined for a third-place finish in the distance medley relay earning another all-conference honor. The quartet ran 10:02.45 in the final event of the day, clocking the third-fastest time in school history.

Competing for the second straight day, Roderick Townsend and Adam Ruggiero combined for eight team points after placing third and seventh in the heptathlon, respectively. The multi-event duo had personal-best efforts in all three events of Fridays events, as well as in their two-day totals. Townsend placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.62), followed by a fourth-place finish in the pole vault (12-5.50). He closed out the day with a best of 2:56.75 in the 1000-meters to finish third with 5,028-points. Ruggiero picked up a seventh-place finish in the hurdles (8.73), a sixth-place finish in the pole vault (11-1.75) and a fourth-place finish in the 1000-meters (2:51.98). Ruggieros total over seven-events was 4,633-points, good for seventh in the heptathlon.

Rolando Trammel added four points to the Broncos team total after placing fifth in the long jump (23-5.25). Matt Post (59-5.75) and Will Lohman (59-2.25) added six points in the weight throw after placing fifth and seventh, respectively. Aaron Back added the final individual point of the day with an eighth-place finish in the 5000-meters (14:41.32). The womens distance medley relay, made up of Jamie Knapp, Chelsey Washington, Emily Funkhouser and Marissa Opatz, added four points to the team score after placing fifth (12:12.50).

Sixteen Broncos earned qualifying spots for Saturdays final rounds, including six women and 10 men. Mackenzie Flannigan qualified in the 60-meters (7.57) and 200-meters (24.36), placing seventh and fourth, respectively, en route to the third-best times in school history for both events. Taryn Campos joined her in the 200-meters, qualifying in eighth with a personal-best time of 24.46-seconds. The senior also earned the second-best 400-meter qualifying time, winning her heat in 55.87-seconds. Teammate Cyntrail Pierce earned the eighth-best time of 56.69-seconds, winning her heat. Rici Morrill captured the seventh-place spot in the 800-meter prelims (2:13.21), while Emma Bates (5:01.44) and Lauren Lucas (5:01.00) qualified in fourth and fifth, respectively in the Mile.

On the mens side Daveon Collins led the Broncos qualifying in second for the 60-meters (6.85), as well as in first for the 200-meters, running the third-fastest time in school history (21.13). Manoah Wesson (21.93) and Paul Robertson (22.03) will join Collins in the 200-meter finals after placing fifth and eighth, respectively. The pair will also compete in the 400-meter final after Wesson was second in the prelims with a time of 48.68-seconds and Robertson seventh (49.48). Jordin Andrade won the 400-meter prelims (47.78), while Bret Scheve (49.06) and Jeff Daw (49.26) placed fourth and sixth, respectively, putting five Broncos in the 400-meter finals. In the 800-meters Bryce Bergevin earned the sixth spot (1:53.74) and Andy Robertson placed seventh (1:53.93) to earn qualifying spots on Saturday. Trammel (7.95) and Justin Malnes (8.01) round out the Bronco qualifiers placing second and fourth in the 60-meter hurdles.

The third and final day of the 2013 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23. The mens high jump will start off the day at 11 a.m. MST, while running events will begin with the womens Mile at 12:30 p.m. Tickets for Saturdays events is $8 for all ages and parking is free of charge.
