Last year's 5A state champion in the shot put, Gracie Strickland of Capital, is back to defend her title this year. Strickland has thrown 39'03" this year in a dual meet against Kuna and trails only Jacoba Luteyn (4A, Bishop Kelly, 40'10") on the state leader list.

The top returning girls discus thrower in 5A is Lily Phenicie of Coeur D'Alene, who already has a throw of 112'06" to her name and currently sits fourth on the overall Idaho state leader board. Phenicie will have her hands full, as junior Ruby Jordan of Highland (Pocatello) has thrown 113'09.50" thus far.

The multi-talented Brinlee Wilde of Idaho Falls is your top returner from the state meet last year in the high jump after her fourth-place finish. Wilde, a state finalist in the 100H as well, has a personal best of 5'02" in the high jump and has a clearance of 5'00" this season. As always in the high jump, the top of the leader list is saturated with competitors that have the same PR's and usually comes down to who comes through on the big stage on early clearances.

Last year's state runner up in 5A, Eva Lowder of Centennial has already matched her PR this year with a clearance of 11'06" last week in the Patriots-Brave Clash and is the Idaho state leader currently. Like the high jump, the competition in the pole vault is deep, with challengers coming via Boise High's trio of Suzi Woodall, Ani Smith and Michaela Gier.

The top three finishers from last year's 5A state championships are all back this year with six of the top eight finishers also returning. As it stands now, Ashlyn Sandow, the sophomore from Timberline, has the best triple jump mark in 5A with her jump of 34'05" in a quad meet last week.
