New National Cross Country Championship Announced for 2007 Press Release Dec 02, 2006

Plenty of hype and excitement surrounds this weekend\'s third annual Nike Team Nationals, as the most of the nation\'s best teams will go head-to-head. But not everyone is thrilled with the names on the entry list. Several very legitimate contenders for some of the top positions in the national meet will get no closer to the action than the live webcast on their computer screen. Next year, however, there will be another choice.

BorderWar Sports has announced that in 2007 they will begin their own version of a high school team cross country championship. Officially endorsed by the AAU and sponsored by JetBlue Airlines (among others), the group will scrap the concept of subjective polls in favor of what many consider the only fair method: regional qualifying meets.

For much of its 33-year history, the Sunfair Invitational has been touted as the Northwest\'s largest single-day high school event. There\'s certainly no doubt of that since over 2,500 runners are expected at Franklin Park on Saturday. In recent years the Northwest influence coming from outside Washington has become more and more with Flathead, Mont., emerging as the meet\'s dominant team in the depth-testing seven-flight scoring format. The Braves are the defending Sunfair boys champs and they won the 2004 girls title. Last year, Thousand Oaks, Calif., edged Flathead for the girls crown. But this year the distant visitors will face a formidable in-state foe in Gig Harbor\'s girls, who rank 13th in the nation and just won a big meet in Boise last week. The Tides won last year\'s state 4A title by a hefty 34 points and they return four of their top five.

Four-time state champion Adam Betterton has signed a scholarship agreement to run track at Oklahoma Baptist University, beginning in 2006-07. Betterton, who won the 2005 110 and 300 hurdles at Shawnee High School, joins the tradition-rich Bison track program that has become a national power in those events.
