Idaho State Championships Does Not Disappoint

In 4A, the talk of the town all season has been Emmett's Landon Helms. He closed out his career with four state titles, including a state record in the 110HH (13.67wp, 13.69f). Helms also won the 300IH (38.15), pole vault (15-00.00), and set a new personal best with his winning long jump of 23.01.00. Senior James Onanubosi (Bishop Kelly) closed out his impressive high school career with wins in the 100m (10.54, 10.51p, 4A class record), 200m (21.96, 21.58p) and the 4x100 (42.16, state leader, 4A class record). Blackfoot's Matt Thomas claimed the distance-double in winning the 1600m (4:15.29) and 3200m (9:14.78). Twin Falls' Daulton Monkress won the 400m (48.60, 4A class record) and the 4x400 (3:24.92), while Pocatello's Sunny Gunn won the 800m (1:57.60) and was on the winning SMR team (3:31.46).

On the girls' side, Skyline sophomore Nelah Roberts added a 4A state record and an overall state record to her resume, winning the 1600 (4:58.06, 4A class record) and the 3200m (10:30.63, state record). Her teammate, junior Claire Petersen, also impressed as she has all season. Petersen would go on to win the 100m (12.03, 4A class record) and the 300IH (45.14). Pocatello sophomore Matejah Mangum would win the 200m (25.08, .01 off the 4A record) and was a part of the winning 4x200m (1:43.70). Bishop Kelly's Jacoba Luteyn continued her state dominance in the throws, winning the shot and discus with state leading marks of 44-03.25 and 144-00.00. Her mark in the shot put was a new 4A state record.
